The important trains operated by South Western Railway’s division are the Karnataka Express that serves between Bangalore and New Delhi, the Lalbagh Express which plies between Bangalore and Chennai, the Udayan Express takes you from Bangalore to Mumbai and the Shatabdi Express that runs between Bangalore and Chennai. The creation of two divisions under South Western Railway has been demanded by the people of the State. The preferred location for the division is Mangalore and Gulbarga. The Mangalore and the nearby Kankinadi stations are under the Palghat division of Southern Railway. There have been demands to remove the Mangalore and nearby stations and place them among the stations under South Western Railway. The regions surrounding Mangalore have been requested to be brought under one division with Mangalore as its headquarters.
The Hassan-Mangalore section of South Western Railway is on the verge of being commissioned. This is a reason why there is felt that a creation of this division will go a long way in strengthening the railway network of Karnataka and at the same time provide better facilities for the region. This is a good reason for the development of South Western Railway and hence the proposed Hubli-Ankola line project. As soon as the proposed line gets ready, the railway network of the State will get a further boost. Not only that, this project will also propel greater economic activity.
The proposed Hubli-Ankola line will also provide connectivity to the Konkan Railway section between Mangalore and Roha at three points - Mangalore, Ankola and Madagaon.
