North Western Railway

The formation of North Western Railway was back in 1886 in the month of January. The amalgam of a number of smaller railways namely the Sind, Punjab and Delhi Railway (SPDR) created the North Western Railway. The Government management took care of this railway. The railway was under the Government management due to the strategic areas it covered. It is one of the 16 railway zones in India. This railway was started with an aim to make traveling to the North West Frontier province easier.

The headquarters of North Western Railway is at Jaipur. The divisions of North Western Railway include Jodhpur, the reorganized Bikaner division of Northern Railway and the reorganized Jaipur and Ajmer divisions of Western Railway. The line from Delhi to Amritsar had been opened in 1870, with the aim of making troop movements to the N.W. Frontier provinces speedier. This met the line from Karachi-Lahore/Amritsar which was opened in stages. This was done by passing the dangerous and slow river crossing by boat. This line had been operated by the Sind, Punjab and Delhi railway (SPDR).

The low value monthly seasonal ticket at North Western Railway are issued to people of unorganized sector like Vegetable Vendors, Domestic helpers, Agriculture Labourers, Construction Workers etc. upto 100 Kms. The student concession at North Western Railway is duly verified to avoid hassles. Earlier, concession in rail fares was allowed to Arjuna Awardees, Gallantry Awardees recipients of Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Vir Chakra and Shaurya Chakra and widow of such post humous awardees and licensed porters(coolies). Now these categories of persons are issued complimentary passes instead of concession.
