The urge of connecting these ports for the sake of the business was deeply felt but even then laying the railway track at the region was seemed to be an engineering challenge. After a lot of Brainstorming and hard work Konkan Railway was finally built to join the important cities of that region.
Konkan Railway is a separately incorporated railway that has its headquarter in CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai. The first chairman as well as the managing director of Konkan Railway was E Sredharan. E Sreedharan was also trusted with zseveral other prestigious projects like Delhimetro projetct and implementation of Anti Collision Detection (ACD) system.
Unlike the other Indian Railways Konkan Railway has no divisions. It operates in two regions with headquarters. One head quarter is situated at Ratnagiri in Maharastra and at Karwar in Karnataka. The southernmost station of this railway is Surathkhal. The reason behind it is that Thokur is not officially treated as a halt. The railway route consists of a single line track. The route is also yet to be electrified. The track can bear a speed of 160 km per hour. Running parallel to th Arabian sea coastline the Konkan Railway offers one of the most breathtaking views from any train.
