Eastern Railway

Eastern Railway services started on 14th April, 1952 by the amalgamation of the East Indian Railway that comprised of Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol and Danapur Divisions and entire Bengal. With effect from 1st August, South Eastern Railway was formed after the portion of BNR stretching from Howrah to Visakhapatnam in the South, Howrah to Nagpur in the Central area and up to Katni in the North Central Region were separated from Eastern Railway. The redistribution and construction of new lines over a period of time was stretched over 4245.61 kilometers.

The Great Indian Peninsular Railway, on 16th April 1853, ran the first train in India, for twenty-one miles from Bombay to Thane. The East Indian Railway (EIR) had been formed long before that, in 1845, but for various reasons- among them the delayed trans-shipment of engines from England and the loss of the first batch of coaches in a shipwreck, the first train in Eastern India steamed out of Howrah Station experimentally on 28th June 1854. It went upto Pandua, though the line had been sanctioned upto Raniganj.

Eastern Railway now consists of 2382.38 Route Kilometres spread over four divisions viz. Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol and Malda.
