Different Railway Zones of India

Indian Railways is one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world which a gigantic railway passenger service. The passenger service network of Indian Railways transports sixteen million passengers daily all over India. Railway Ministry of India which controls the Indian Railways works under the hegemony of the the Union Minister for Railways. The railway minister in turn is assisted by two junior Ministers of State for Railways. Indian Railways is divided into sixteen zones for facilitating its administrations.

The different zones of Indian Railways are as follows:
  1. Northern Railway (NR)
  2. North Eastern Railway (NER)
  3. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR)
  4. Eastern Railway (ER)
  5. South Eastern Railway (SER)
  6. South Central Railway (SCR)
  7. Southern Railway( SR )
  8. Central Railway (CR)
  9. Western Railway( WR)
  10. South Western Railway (SWR)
  11. North Western Railway (NWR)
  12. West Central Railway (WCR)
  13. North Central Railway (NCR)
  14. South East Central Railway (SECR)
  15. East Coast Railway (ECoR)
  16. East Central Railway (ECR)
  17. Konkan Railway( KR )


The sixteen zones of Indian Railways is headed by a General Manager or GM who reports directly to the Railway Board. These zones of Indian Railways are further divided into divisions which operate under the control of Divisional Railway Managers or DRM. This array of zones of Indian Railway helps it to mange its work force better and give a better service to the Indian Public.

The Calcutta Metro is owned and operated under the aegis of Indian Railways but Calcutta Metro doesn't fall under any of the various zones of Indian Railways. Administratively Calcutta Metro is considered to have the status of a zonal railway. The zones in Indian Railways is made up of a certain number of divisions. These railway divisions under a zone each have a divisional headquarters. There are altogether of sixty-seven divisions under zones of Indian Railways.
